Is it better to do away with washing liquid and dish washing detergent for washing dishes?

To what extent can hot water tackle dirty dishes? What hazards are in perpetual use of the stuff? Could you please address both under-the-faucet cleaning and washing with a dishwasher. Has anyone tried running a washing cycle without putting the detergent?
