Why do Mexicans say that New Mexico belonged to them.........?

Before Mexico had control of the south The Spaniards had control first, after the native americans of course and before the pilgrims and europeans. I get really upset when they dont know their history. I am Hispanic (not mexican) from New Mexico and i know my history and my culture. New Mexico still has very strong blood ties to the Spaniards so i hate it when people call us mexicans.
