Why does the number of Americans travelling to Europe dip in August each year?

I'm from the UK but work for a company that serves US travellers visiting mainly Europe. Every year we notice a peak in June, then a mive dip in August, but with a rise again in September. Is their a social/economic/historical etc. reason why travel to Europe declines in August? We're baffled!
